Yacht Class n°20 (march-april-may 2020)

Ferretti Yachts Group

Ferretti Yachts is second to none when it comes to expanding the range, as obsessed as it is with the renewal of its models or the expansion of its flybridge family. Thus, in 2019, we weren’t really surprised by the appearance of a new unit, the 720, confirming the ambition of the yard: to design a high-performance, comfortable and attractive yacht.

It would be impossible not to remind as a preamble that the strength of this brand is its unquestionable power of symbolizing the flybridge style from 15 to 30 metres. Thus, the unique silhouette of Ferretti Yachts has found its place in this highly-coveted sector. Don’t we said that their exterior design is based on two criteria: the temporality of the forms but also a certain modernity. Years have little impact on the silhouette of a Ferretti, end of the story. So, for the 720, let’s commend the work of the designer, Filippo Salvetti, and of Ferretti’s Product Strategy Committee and Engineering Department. This creation really makes us want to know her better. And not only during a visit at quay, even though she is in the Vieux Port of Cannes. In other words: there is nothing like a sea trip.

Two engine configurations

Before casting off, let’s take a peek in the engine room and its professionally assembled twin MAN V12 – 1 400 hp, the maximum power. From this strategic location, we headed then to another major spot : the sundeck helm station, located on starboard and fitted with a two-seater settee, offering an ideal point of view for port manoeuvres, at least for those requiring close attention. Once at sea, our only regret is the limited effectiveness of the reverse wind deflector. As for the rest, we can only praise the talent of the naval architect, whose mission was to design a hull with an impeccable seaworthy behaviour. And she is actually close to this, at least as far as we could assess on a slightly rippled sea. The pilot should quickly appreciate the electric power-steering system, especially if he frequently has to change course. Nor will he hide his satisfaction at seeing the dashboard screen display a 31.2 knots top speed, which is slightly above the figures released by the yard. For a 22-metre, of about 50 tons at half-load, this is very positive. Yet, let’s not forget that the concept of range prevails on cruises, so she has a recommended speed is 21.9 knots for a 324 miles range. Some will find it satisfying, the others will opt for the less voracious 2 x 1 200 hp configuration, to gain a few nautical miles and a few thousand euros. No matter which version is chosen, there is, of course, a wheelhouse, discreetly located on the main deck starboard. The pilot and co-pilot will enjoy a decent visibility on over 180 degrees but also comfortable and adjustable seats, adapted for long cruises…. It features a very intuitive console, although we would have preferred it more design… well, it’s a matter of taste.

Well-thought-out outdoors

A flybridge hints at the pleasure the outdoors are expected to offer. Let’s remain at the sea level and head to the stern. There is no real beach club, yet it offers a teak large hydraulic swim platform, in addition to a fold-down transom settee. There is no garage convertible into a lounge either, since this volume is dedicated to the crew quarters (two berths and a bathroom). Hence, the tender is attached to the platform. On each side of the 720, a gangway leads to the very convivial foredeck, where are located a salon and a vast solarium for four people. For all those wishing to have a meal as close as possible to the sea, two options: either in the cockpit, where are fitted a table, a settee and chairs for six people, or on the flybridge that offers, in addition to the same comfort, an even more panoramic view. Both places are protected from the sun or the rain. The flybridge also welcomes up to three deckchairs on the aft terrace and has a kitchenette, but there is no jacuzzi, for weight concerns!

All the cabins belowdecks

With a total surface area of 35 m2, the main deck reception emerges as a unique space, where guests will like to gather more often than not. It features a saloon with a nice sea view thanks to large side windows. Natural light abounds and the maritime landscape hides nothing of its beauty. The spectacle remains the same when sitting at the dining table for eight. Just one metre to port is located the open-plan galley with a complete equipment to allow the chef to prepare gastronomic menus. The time has come to head the sleeping accommodation belowdecks, where will be housed all the passengers from the owner to the family members, including guests. Let’s start with the amidships master, whose 20 m2 were designed to offer great comfort. The lower deck also houses a forward VIP, plus two twin cabins, bringing the sleeping capacity to eight passengers and two crew members.
