Organized by the Yacht Club Italiano, the Yacht Club de France and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, the event – one of the oldest and most popular regattas of the Mediterranean – once again offered to the crews coming from all over the world a high-flying competition and a busy program : a night race from Sanremo to Saint-Tropez, inshore regattas there and, to finish, the 241-mile offshore race between the capital of the jetset and Genoa, by the rock of Giraglia which gave its name to this race. A total of 184 yachts participated in this symbolic edition. The German boat Red Bandit took victory of the offshore race, while the Australian Maxi Black Jack wins the “line honors” after a crossing of 23 hours, 30 minutes and 16 seconds. Note that this maxi of 100 feet (30.48 m) is no stranger the history of the Giraglia, since she claimed the line honours title on eight occasions and had twice broken the Rolex Giraglia race record (2008 and 2012) under the names of Alfa Romeo 2 and Esimit Europa 2. This record of 18 hours 3 minutes and 54 seconds still stands.

© Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi

REAL CLUB NAUTICO BARCELONE (RCNB)

Un spectacle des temps passés

A spectacle of the earlier times

Almost 50 yachts and 400 participants, the 16th Puig Vela Clàssica, which took place last July off the Barcelona club, lived up to its promises. This regatta – one of the most prestigious classic yacht races in the Mediterranean – once again brought together the most beautiful units for three days of regattas, under the gaze of the participants in the future America’s Cup, like Alinghi Redbull Racing from the Société Nautique de Genève (another club twinned with the Yacht Club de Monaco) or Team New Zealand, title defender. The third and final day of this 16th edition offered a grand finale with the parade of the fleet which, after casting off at the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, passed over the large bridge that links Portal de la Pau with the Maremagnum, under the eyes of the public. Once on the race course, the third regatta brought together all the different classes thanks to an innovative Reverse Start System, which offered participants the theoretical possibility to all reach the finish line at the same time. At the end of a race where the outcome of the competition depends on the human factor, the first to cross the line was the winner of the regatta, in its category. The general classification saw the victories of Argyll (Bermudian vintage), Marigan (Cangreja vintage), Disparate (Classic 1), Argos (Classic 2), Ojala II (Classic IOR), Legolas (Modern Classic) and Viveka (Big Boats). Don’t forget that next year, in addition to the Puig Vela Clàssica and many other major events, the Catalan capital will host the 37th America’s Cup and its cutting-edge sailboats. The sponsor of the Vela Clàssica, Puig, has recently announced its partnership with this event and will give its name to the first Women’s America’s Cup.

© Nico Martinez

CLUBE NAVAL DE CASCAIS (CNC)

A successful edition

Three years after its creation, the Mirpuri Foundation Trophy has become one of the highlights of the Portuguese club and European sailing calendar. For this fourth edition, a record number of entries was registered in the six classes taking part in this competition. Early July, 171 boats and 600 sailors competed in the ideal conditions the Atlantic is famous for at this time of year, allowing disputed regattas on the water. After a fierce battle, the professional team of the Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team, and their VO65 “Racing for the Planet” skippered by the three-time Portuguese Olympian Diogo Cayolla, seized the impressive Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy. The corrected time race saw the victories of “Syone Panther” (ORC), “2Hot2Handle” (ORC B), “Gurosan/Pedemar” (NHC) and “Barba Rija” (NHC mini). The former Olympic Finn class was dominated by Filipe Silva, winner of the six races, while Tiago Morais took victory in the SB20 dinghy class. With over 70 boats competing, the Junior Optimist class was won by Diogo Reis. The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy, created in 2020, is recognized by UNESCO as an Ocean Decade event for the regatta’s work to promote and raise funds for ocean health initiatives. Entry fees for this sustainability-focused regatta are donated by the Mirpuri Foundation to projects dedicated to these goals. In addition to the competitive awards, the Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award in partnership with ICRI, the International Coral Reef Initiative, was awarded to Tamara Stuij for her work on the potential of humic substances (organic compounds present in humus or peat) to improve coral reef resilience.

The J/70 World Championships in 2026

After Monaco in 2022 and the Yacht Club Argentino in 2025, the J/70 Executive Committee has awarded the hosting of the twelfth J/70 World Championships to Cascais, in 2026. This race of 160 kilometres takes between 12 and 17 hours, depending on the weather conditions, the boat’s equipment and the skill level of the crew. Since last year, it is organized in partnership with the Banque Cantonale de Genève (BCGE), which also supports one of its members, rower and world champion Eline Rol.

© Pedro Neto

The elegance of boats from yesteryear

Late June, classic boats from around the lake met up at La Nautique for the Hélice Classique with Wood & Boat. The wind was a bit of a spoilsport, but the magnificent Riva, Boesch, Chris Craft and other Rio boats moored at the Club’s quay of honour were not impacted. The rather insistent wind all day nevertheless forced the crews to remain within the Club’s harbour for the aquatic events. The skippers put on a great show and demonstrated their agility, particularly during the traditional manoeuvrability contest, much to the delight of visitors ashore. A partner of the event, Wood & Boat was present with several restored masterpieces. The Boesch 650 caught the eye with its trompe-l’oeil hull effect. The 1959 Christ Craft and the Riva Olympic were equally breathtaking. The Club’s partner, Bentley Genève – Groupe Chevalley, was also on deck to present the range from this inescapable English car manufacturer.

© Sébastien Tavarez Gomes

Written by Aurore Teodoro

[18

post-44516","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-yachting-around-the-world-en

NEWS FROM THE TWINNED CLUBS (n°34) - YachtClass

<meta name="description" content="News from the club twinned with the Yacht Club de Monaco (Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Uruguay...)
