Yacht Class n°24 (march-april-may 2021)

Zeelander Yachts B.V.

The Dutch shipyard has never concealed its ambition to aim higher after the launch of its Z55. In 2019, it unveiled its biggest unit, the Z72, whose profile is “to the nearest inch” the same as that of the other two models. Vintage enthusiasts will be delighted, as will those who love speed : 40 knots with the triple Volvo IPS1350 configuration !

Born at the beginning of the third millennium, the Dutch brand immediately showed its passion for units with a strong character, even with the anticipated risk of only appealing a fairly small customer base. This daring gamble was successful. Zeelander’s choice did not fail to seduce enthusiasts of half-modern, half-retro boats with a “vintage” silhouette. The shipyard was inspired by American lobsters, while giving them a dynamic but also sensual – thanks to the curves – personality. To be convinced, just have a look at the technical specifications. The Z72 offers a selection of triple Volvo Penta IPS choices : 3 x IPS950 (3 x 725 hp), 3 x IPS1050 (3 x 800 hp), 3 x IPS1200 (3 x 900 hp) and finally 3 x IPS1350 (3 x 1 000 hp). With the latter, the Z72 should reach the maximum speed of 40 knots. If the hull’s behaviour is as positive as that of her little sister’s, the Z55, then there is every reason to be satisfied. Her slightly flared bow, the very receding shape of its transom and the lightness of the hard-top give her a magnificent look, especially at sea.

Cockpit + swim platform = farniente

But, of course, as expected from a unit of this size, the Z72 has an obvious role : offering all the comfort necessary for cruises with six passengers minimum. First, let’s linger for a moment on the aft part of the main deck of this 22-metre whose transom unfolds to become a 10 m2 swim platform. From this bathing area, three steps lead up to the cockpit, where we discover first a vast solarium (for four). A folding backrest transforms its front part into a settee. Add to this a second, opposite settee with, in between, a table with a varnished wooden table top, and you get an ideal dining area. And let’s continue with the farniente atmosphere, with an outdoor bar, and four stools, that also forms the lower part of the partition separating the cockpit from the interiors. A configuration borrowed from the Z55 that has become somewhat Zeelander trademark. The main deck forms a single volume housing the open-plan galley, with a slight semi-circular shape for a design effect, the dining area that can accommodate six thanks to the addition of the three wheelhouse seats, and the wheelhouse. This dining area can also be converted into an additional double berth, but cannot become a fourth cabin considering its location. This main deck gathering a main galley and saloon/dining area also houses the only steering position, which is central and enjoys a good 360 degree visibility. The dashboard, its three screens, reversing gearbox and joystick look great in this contemporary interior design, enhanced by the abundant natural light boosted by the sunroof.

A master & two guests

Starboard of the wheelhouse is located a staircase leading directly to the lower deck and the sleeping accommodation. First comes the forward master with its “king size” bed and private bathroom with shower and WC. This very pleasant place features portholes and also a sky-light. It is so bright and refined that it should quickly appeal to the owners. The two en suite guest cabins enjoy a similar surface and configuration. It only seems legitimate to conclude that this model should easily join a charter flee.
